R.O.C. Mammoth August 18, 2017
Joined the Raptor Offroad Community (ROC) on their 3-day adventure exploring Mammoth Mountain, CA. Starting from Minden, NV, the group of about 17 trucks made their way across the smooth power line roads of Nevada into the Inyo National Forest to Mammoth. Trails were rocky and overgrown with brush & trees, which made for a slower pace and some unwanted "pin-striping," but offered breathtaking views of the mighty Sierra Nevada and White Mountain Ranges. Attractions included stops at Pine Grove Historical Site Mine, Pine Grove Cemetery, touring the Long Valley Caldera, Hot Creek Geothermal Springs, Lake Crowley, Fish Slough Petroglyphs, Chidago Canyon (Red Canyon), Mc Pherson Grade through the 2012 Indian Fire burn scar into Mono Mills Historic Site, Mono Lake Tufa South Shore, and a race to beat the setting sun to the Devil's Postpile National Monument. We also toured some very young volcanic craters, which included hiking up to Inyo Craters, visiting Obsidian Dome, driving through the Devil's Punchbowl, and viewing the geologic wonder that is Panum Crater. We even saw some wild Mustangs. This was definitely one of my top favorite trips, being a Geology-buff and all! I seriously cannot wait to go back next year!
